Below are details of the 79 men from Leeds who gave their lives fighting for the Australian Armed Services during World War One.

BALL John Thomas 

Private 2871 51st Bn Australian Infantry Died of Alcoholic Poisoning 06/07/1918 Aged 37.  

 

Born Leeds 1880. Son of John H and Annie Husband of Jane married around 1900/1901. 1911 Living at 17 Fleece Lane Leeds Occupation Boatman. Went to Australia same year. Occupation Australia farm hand previousley served in England in 68th Bn Durham Light Infantry. Enlisted Blackboy Hill West Australia 10/07/1916 Residence 14 Lansdowne Street Jolimont Western Australia. Landed Davenport 10/01/1917 Hospitalised 31 days with VD went to Etaples 23/05/1917 to unit one month later.

BARR Andrew 

Private 569 15th Bn Australian Infantry KIA 08/08/1915 Aged 33. 

 

Born Howden. Son of James and Mary. Attended Blackman Road Council School Leeds. Went to Australia 1910 sister Edith Mary resided at North Park Road Roundhay Leeds. Enlisted Brisbane 15/10/1914 Occupation Gas Stoker. Wounded ANZAC Cove Gunshot Wound right shoulder 15/05/1915. 

 

Remembered Lone Pine Memorial Galipoli Turkey and Australian War Memorial Canberra Panel 74.  

BAYLIFF John George 

Gunner 35270 10th Brigade 39th Bn Australian Field Artillery KIA 08/08/1918 Aged 19. 

 

Born Bramley  1899. Son of John William and Clara Turner Married St Peters Church Leeds 1897. John had a sister Clara Maud Born 1897 Died British Columbia Canada 1973. In 1901 the family were living at 22 Bath Avenue Bramley Leeds. Enlisted Perth 09/08/1916, he gave his fathers address as Millerfield Post office Alberta Canada.

 

Just after 15.00 hrs on 08/08/1918 near Chippily Wood John volunteered along with Sydney John Dutton to retrieve Driver William Gorden Morrissey and Driver Leslie Victor Chandler who had been hit (Red Cross), John and Sydney were both killed outright by a shell as they assist their comrades. They were all buried by Headquarter Staff at:

BETTS Samuel 

Sapper 2197 8th Field Company Australian Engineers KIA 19/07/1916 Aged 18. 

 

Born Leeds 1898. Son of Samuel and Eliza Cottingham Married Basford 1884. Had one sister Nellie Born 1885. In 1901 the family were living in Sheepscar Street Leeds. Samuels father was a brush maker. Samuel Enlisted Melbourne 27/11/1914. Wounded at Gallipoli 15/05/1915. 

 

At Fleurbaix on the 19/07/1916 Samuel was killed by an incendiary shell, Sapper J T McDermott reported to the Australian Red Cross that he had seen Samuel that he was badly burned and had been buried near the Light Railway behind Mine Avenue.  

 

The family were living at 48 Brownhill Crescent Harehills Lane Leeds when Samuel lost his life.

BIGGLESTON Thomas Private 7111 16th Bn Australian Infantry 28/09/1917 Aged 31. Born Leeds 1884. Son of William and Elizabeth Ann Featherstone Married Medway 1876. In 1881 William Thomas father was living with his brother in Chapeltown Leeds. Occupation Engine Driver. Enlisted Black Boy Hill near Perth  27/11/1916 resided at Collie. Landed Etaples France 27/05/1917. Reported to have been Killed by a shell whilst in the trench near Passchendaele and buried with others who lost their lives near where he fell.  (Eyewitness Account) Red Cross Remembered on Ypres Menine Gate Memorial Belgium. BOLTON Henry Sergeant 590 16th Bn Australian Infantry KIA 12/08/1916 Aged 32. Born Leeds 12/03/1884   Service Record Enlisted 25/09/1914 Occupation Engine Driver. Promoted Sergeant 14/08/1915. Killed at Pozieres Australian Red Cross Two reports one that he was killed by a shell whilst sleeping, the other that he was killed by a shell in the communication trench. BOND James Private 7612 5th Bn Australian Pioneers KIA 24/04/1918 Aged 39. Born Leeds 1869. Son of James Elisha and Sarah Ann Patrick Married St Saviour Cross Green Leeds 1868. In 1881 James was living with his grandparents in Garforth Leeds. Address of Mother given as 11 Danby Street Cromwell Street Newtown (Burmantofts). One sister Ada Smith of 15 Pape Street Cromwell Street Leeds. Previously  served 18 months in Royal Navy. Enlisted Mitcham South Australia 23/04/1917. Landed Le Harve France 03/03/1918. Reported to have been buried in an isolated grave 1/2 mile South east of Fouilloy 1 mile South of Corbie. James was reburied in Crucifix Corner Cemetery Villers-Bretonneux France. BONHAM Alfred Edmund Private 3759 7th Company Australian Machine Gun Corps DOW 04/10/1917 Aged 20. Born Leeds 1897. Son of William James and Emily Marie Thompson Married Kensington March 1886. Alfreds Father owned an Hotel on Harrogate Road Harewood. One Sister Gertrude and one Brother Jack Montague. Enlisted New South Wales 13/09/ 1915. Landed France 27/05/1917.  Reported that Alfred died of wounds before reaching the clearing station and was buried at Zonnebecke Belgium. BONTOFT Percy George Private 45 A Company 32nd Bn Australian Infantry KIA 20/07/1916 Aged 19. Born Leeds 1897. Son of George and Lucy Jane Frost Married Lincoln 1882. Enlisted Keswick South Australia 20/07/1915. Landed MarsaillesFrance 23/06/1916. Reported Missing on the 19/07/1916. Private W. H Collins stated the following "I knew him well and last saw him on 19/07/1916 at night in no mans land at Fleurbaix. I spoke to him, he said a machine gun had got him. He was very badly wounded and lying down." Percy had been seen hit around 18.00 hrs on the 19/06/1916 and when the observers went back the land was all ploughed up. (Red Cross) In July 1925 Percys father was informed that during excavation work in the neighbourhood of Mouquet Farm Belgium, that the remains of Percy were found being identified by his dog tag.  Remembered on the Australian War Memorial Canberra Panel 120 Roll of Honour

BOURKE James Private 1513 3rd Bn Australian Infantry Died of Wounds 14/08/1915 onboard "SS Guildford Castle" Aged 27.  Born Leeds Enlisted 28/08/1914 Residence Kensington Sydney Occupation Labourer. Mortally Wounded by bomb between 07/12/08/1915. His aunt was Mrs Williamson living at 2 Prospect Street Hunslet at the time of his death.

BOWEN Herbert William Corporal 1149 D Company 19th Bn Australian Infantry KIA 11/08/1918 Aged 30.  Military Medal Page 54 London Gazette 14/05/1919. Born Sydney. Enlsisted 08/03/1915. Wounded in Action France 28/07/1916 Multiple Gun Shot Wounds Right Thigh transferred to Leeds 2nd Northern General Hospital. Son of John Tulip Bowen and Margaret Hannah Soulsby Married March 1880. Married Isabel Sawyer 23rd March 1917 at Leeds Registry Office, Address of Isabel given as 8 Doris Avenue Stoney Rock Lane Leeds. On the 11/08/1918 aged 30 during an attack at Rainecourt East of Amiens, Herbert was awarded the Military Medal for rushing a Snipers Position, it was reported that he was accompinied by Sgt Hall and Herbert was severley wounded about 12 yards from the enemys position. Sgt John Hall 1392 KIA 03/10/1918 threw a bomb killing two Germans and capturing three others he was also awarded the MM 14/05/1919. At 06.00 hrs on the 11/08/1918 at Framerville a Runner Pvt H. S. Doohan 3796 saw Herbert walking with an injured arm towards the first aid post, he had to walk through an orchard that was being heavily shelled at the time, one can only presume this is where Herbert lost his life.  In 1922 Isabel was living in Redfern Sydney New South Wales. BOWKETT John Henry Private 1412 13th Company Australian Machine Gun Corps DOW Aged 11/06/1917 Aged 21. Born Erdington Birmingham 1895. Son of Henry and Harriett Augustine Maintenant Born Paris France, they Married at St Saviour Southwark London 1884. John had a Brother Thomas William and a sister Mary Margaret Born 1897 who was killed in the second explosion at Barnbow Ordanance factory Cross Gates Leeds on the 21/03/1917. Enlisted 16/11/1914  Foster Victoria. Wounded in Action 09/06/1917 suffered a fractured skull, passed away at the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station Bailleul.Australian War Memorial Canberra Panel 177.  Roll of Honour

BROUGHTON Alfred 1981 Private 39th Bn Australian Infantry KIA Etrecourt 30/09/1918 Aged 27. Born Hunslet 1892. Son of Joseph William and Sarah Ann Hugill Married Hartlepool 1880. Enlisted 22/05/1915 Adelaide Occupation Baker. Wounded Gunshot to forearm at Flerbeux Battle of Fromelles France. Wounded once in March 1917 Gunshot wound to buttock and shoulder and again in October 1917 at Ypres whilst carrying out fatigues. BUCKLE Arthur Private 4370 A Company 19th Bn Australian Infantry KIA Bullecourt 03/05/1917 Aged 25. Born Holbeck 1892. Son of Francis Stead and Sarah Jane. Enlisted 04/10/1915 Residence Balmain Sydney Occupation Engineers Pattern Maker. Nicknamed Alex. Wounded Gun shot wound to thigh Ypres sector 04/10/1916. Arthur was described as being one of the best scouts in the battalion and was paired with Tom Duffy. Enlisted 21/02/1916 Townsville Queensland. Medically Discharged 04/01/1918 due to dabability, reported on medical that was in dug out that was shelled and blown in. (Shell Shock)  Service Record. CHAPMAN Lupton Private 4767 43rd Bn Australian Infantry DOW ? 01/06/1918 Aged 40. Born Pudsey September 1878. Son of Allin and Emma Lupton. Husband of Kathleen Maguire Married 1897. Lupton had four sons and two daughters. Occupation Gardener went to Australia 1913. Enlisted 23/12/1916. Landed France 24/12/1917. At 22.30hrs on the 31st May 1918 Lupton left his trench with eight other men to take part on a raid on German trenches to the left of Villiers Brettoneaux, it was reported by Lance Corporal Day that he was seen jumping into the German trench and was not seen again along with three other men. The following evening the 1st June 1918 a party was sent out into no mans land but no trace of Lupton or the other men were found. It was assumed at the time that they had been taken prisoner. Two of the three men were Private John Eugene Curtis and Corporal William Hamley Healey. Also reported that he Died Multiple Gun Shot Wounds abdomen 17th Casualty Clearing Station Poperinghe Belgium. CORKER Harry Trooper 252 "B" Squadron 10th Australian Light Horse DOW at Sea 10/08/1915 Aged 27. Born Bootle Liverpool 1888. Son of William and Ellen Hulme Married December 1886. Were living at 3 Bentley Grove Meanwood Leeds in 1915. Harry attended Meanwood Church School. Emigrated Australia 1911. Enlisted Claremont Western Australia 19/10/1914. One Brother William won the Military Medal after serving in the 4th Austaralin Infantry, he reported that is other brother name unknown was with Harry when he was wounded. His service record shows Harry was severly injured by gunshot wounds to the abdomin and spine on the 10/08/1915. ELLIS Arthur Henry 3125 Lance Corporal 58th Bn Australian Infantry KIA FleurBaix Attack at Fromelles 19/07/1916 Aged 20.

ELLIS ABOVE Born New Wortley 27/09/1895. Son of Darc and Elizabeth Wood Married St Bartholomew Armley 1893. CWGC 35 Stanley Street South Warrnambool Victoria. Enlisted Melbourne 16/07/1915 Occupation Factory Hand Left Melbourne onboard RMS Osterley 29/09/1915 For Alexandria then onto Marsailles.  More than one Red Cross witness stated that they saw Arthur Lose his life whilst digging a communication trench in no mans land by Shell fire. A Sergeant C. Clarke 2260 reported that Arthur was shot by a machine gun around 2 am Arthur was reported to have thrown up his arms and shouted "Im Gone". Reported that Arthur was laid to rest in Fleurbaix Cemetery his Service record confirms he was laid to rest in the vacinity of FleurBaix.  Red Cross Statements. A sad note is in the service record Darcy Arthurs father asks twice for his sons effects which were not forthcoming, he recieved his sons medals in 1922.  Remembered V.C. Son of Thomas William and Ellen Prince Married Leeds Registered Building 1877. Went to Australia Aged two. Enlisted Brisbane 10/06/1916. Occupation School Teacher Residence Lakes Creek Rockhampton Queensland. Left Sydney 07/02/1917 onboard HMAT Wiltshire. FOX Walter Private 2902 55th Bn Australian Infantry KIA 01/09/1918 Aged 36.  Born Marshall Row Garforth September 1882 Vol 9c Page 775. Son of George and Mary Smith Born Kippax 1851 who Married Garforth December 1877 Vol 9c Page 1095. Mary Died George remarried to Rachel Pickard at Bradford in September 1898 Vol 9b Page 248. Walter in his will bequested his belongings to his father and step mother living at 18 Regent Road Horsforth Leeds. One Sister Violetta. Arrived Australia 04/09/1912 Occupation Engine Driver. Enlisted Sydney 18/09/19 Occupation Engineer. Landed Le Harve France 21/11/1917. KIA by Shell fire on the attack on Peronne Village Somme. March 1919 reported that Walter had been buried in an isolated Grave Bank and Broadgauge Railway half mile North of Peronne. GILDERDALE William Henry Sapper 1935 2nd Field Company Australian Engineers DIED 02/06/1920 Aged 46. (possibly from infection caught in Egypt.) Born Farnley Leeds 1875 Husband of Martha 108 Wortley Road. Enlisted Melbourne 08/07/1915 Richmond Hotel Church Street Richmond Victoria. Left Sydney on board HMAT Port Lincoln 14/10/1915. Egypt 1916 suffered from severe stomach problems causing major weight loss. Discharged 27/04/1917 Permanently unfit for War Service at Home or Abroard. He had a Tatoo of a nude women over a map of Australia, intended to move back to Leeds to 23 Lodge Avenue Tong Road Armley. Laid to Rest Leeds Upper and Lower Wortley Cemetery. Not Remembered on Australian War Memorial Canberra.

GLEDHILL Alfred Bernard Private 1557 (1465) 46th Bn Australian Infantry KIA 13/08/1916 near Pozierres France. Born Leeds 1888. Son of Richard Younge and Emily Mann Married Ovenden 1879 . Enlisted under the Alias name of Alfred Bernard Hammill (1465) the surname of his sister Florence who he lived with for a short time after she was married as recorded in a letter from her in his service record. Left Plymouth Uk for Australia On board S.S. Liguria. Enlisted Melbourne 14/10/1914. Left Melbourne on board HMAT Runic 19/02/1915. Landed Gallipoli 08/05/1915. Attended Leeds University Husband of Ada Craig Baird of Learmouth Victoria. Enlisted Melbourne 14/06/1915. He embarked with the 9th Reinforcements on 16 February 1916. GRAYSON Alfred Private 5709 11th Bn Australian Infantry Force Killed in Action 12/04/1917 Aged 28. Born Leeds 1889. Son of William and Emily Lawson Married St John The Evangelist 1889. CWGC 7 Cliffdale Grove Meanwood Road. Enlisted 04/08/1915. Landed Marseilles France 06/04/1916. February to March 1916 Hospital in Rouen with Flu. On 03/05/1917 at 03.45 am Tom along with his Bn advanced East of Bullecourt Village (Details Found Here)  Private G. P Owen 6800 reported that he had seen Tom with a bad head and shoulder wound only being recognised by his papers, having been killed by a shell along with 2nd Lt V. B. Daniel, and  Pvt J. L. Slavin  M. M. and Pvt G. R. Henderson.   (Australian Red Cross)  He went on to say that all four were buried in a military grave, though others reported that they were just covered on the trench parapet. Discharged due to being too young lying about age and parents not giving consent. Strong possibility Army found that Morris was Jewish it was illegal for Russian descendants to enlist. Re joined 30/07/1918. Left Melbourne landed Liverpool on board Nestor 28/02/1918. 1916: John is described as being 5 ft 7 1/2 inches tall Fair complexion and hair blue eyes a scar right forehead.

1916: Enlisted duration of war 13th March Armidale New South Wales 13th March Residence Young Street Lambton Newcastle New South Wales.

1916: Rank Sergeant Embarked from Sydney 04th May H.M.A.T Marathon.

1918: Red Cross witness reports state that he was shot through the head by a sniper, another reports he was hit in the chest by machine gun fire, and buried 500 yards east of the village of Cachy. Reports also state buried along with many others on the edge of Hangard Wood.

MILLER Joseph Sergeant 3984 B Company 21st Bn Australian Infantry KIA  28/08/1916 Aged 35.

 

Joseph states in his service record that he was born in Leeds and is age was 34 hence is inclusion. The CWGC  record shows "Son of Samuel and Sarah Miller. Husband of Nellie Robin (formerly Miller), of 145, New Queens Road. Bombay, India. Born at Sunderland" ? Joseph gave his occupation as CID Inspector in Bombay India, having served 15 years imperial service. Joseph Enlisted Melbourne  09/10/1915. Landed Marsailles 13/05/1916, Sergeant 01/06/1916. Red Cross witnesses stated that Joseph went missing on the 26/08/1916, however reports suggest he took part in the attack on the 28/08/1916 on Mouquet Farm near the Thiepval Memorial. It was reported that all officers had been killed and Joseph led the men up the hill where he was seen to fall into a German trench either being hit by a bomb or bullet. In September 1916 Joseph name was published by the Army Corps Commander for the good work Joseph had carried out at  Pozieres. KIA at Mouquet Farm Somme. MOFFAT Edward Bombardier 930 1st Brigade Australian Field Artillery Died Influenza Pneumonia (Spanish Flu) 4th Southern General Hospital Plymouth 28/10/1918 Aged 26. Born Leeds 1892. Son of John Patterson Hogg and Mary Howard Married Leeds 1889. 1911 Edward was living 12 Clarendon Place Headingley, Occupation Insurance Clerk. Enlisted St Kilda Victoria 18/08/1914 14 days after war was declared. Left Melbourne 20/10/1914 onboard HMAT Shropshire. 20/05/1915 Gun shot wound to head at Gallipoli. Taken to Alexandria Egypt posted back to Gallipoli in September, suffered from Gastritis sent to hospital at island of Lemnos. Contracted Jaundice on way back to England, however it appears Edward spent time at Etaples France before moving to weymouth whrere he was taken on strength. Edward was due to leave for Australia for outstanding leave accrued from 1914 on the 13/10/1918 at Le Harve but disembarked on the 14/10/1918 at St Budeaux. In February 1969 the curater for Edwards brother Frank Alan Moffat applied for details of Edwards death Certificate, as it was believed Edward had died at on the 08/10/1918. Edwards service record shows he was laid to rest at Eggbuckland Cemetery Plymouth Grave Ref 4478 Class C by Reverend father W G Harris, and that the coffin was elm with brass fittings. Full military honours were given with a bugelar and firing party as well as pallbearers. Edwards coffin was draped in the Union Flag with many wreaths. The funeral was attended by Edwards mother two sisters and Edwards Fiancee Miss Strickland and fellow soldiers from the St Bordeaux Rest Camp Plymouth. The last post was sounded at the graveside and the AIF were to place an Oak Cross over the grave. The CWGC site states Plymouth Efford Cemetery. Australian Roll of Honour Canbera Panel 11.

Ernest went to Australia Aged 15. Residence "Leeds" Laycock Street Neutral Bay North Sydney. Enlisted Holdsworthy Sydney New South Wales 01/11/1915 Occupation Storeman. Left Sydney onbaord HMAT Runic 20/01/1916. Landed Marsailles 03/04/1916 and was sent to the training camp at Etaples near Bolougne. 06/08/1916 wounded in action at Pozieres gun shot wounds to left thigh and wrist (Severe) 3inch piece of shell removed from wrist. Open wound on thigh. sent to St Lukes Hospital Halifax. Ernest went to Harefield and then to Weymouth in August 1916. After training at a signal school he went back to France in 12/03/1918. Marched back into Battalion 17/03/1918 went on Rest in Boves France 12/04/1918. Australian Red Cross: Signaller S W Roberts reported that he was in Boves Town Hall 100 yards from Ernest when a high volocity shell landed on Ernest killing him instantly. Roberts went on to say that Ernest was tall with a gaunt face and slow of speech. He had been the signaller instructor in Wiltshire England and said Ernest was awaiting papers to go home. (OTHER Ernest will shows all his belongings to go to his mother if not,to his sister Nellie Moor Married to Frederick Christopher Moor in services she had rendered to his mother. Baxter 1433 described how George was in a trench when a shell landed causing wounds to his head and shoulder. Gunner R. M Scott described how he held George in his arms and that he died almost immediatley and he never spoke. He went on to say that a Methodist Padre officiated over his grave. To Le Harve from Folkestone onboard SS Arundale 02/02/1917. Sent to Fovant district Wiltshire November 1917. Reported that on the 17/02/1918 the horse Thomas was driving had bolted throwing him off and causing the cart to hit an obstrucction resulting in concussion of the brain. Sister Sara Ann Dixon Sydney New South Wales. Enlisted Holdsworthy New South Wales 14/09/1915 Lied about his age stating he was nearly 22. Residence with sister Glenlea Fletcher Street Woolhara New South Wales. Wounded in Action France 18/08/1916 Gun shot wounds to Arm severe on 21/08/1917 sent to Northern General Hospital Sheffield. Back to France early 1917. Corporal E R Henry 938 reported that 3 miles west of Westhoek Ridge the company were attached to a party of engineers and were making there way to dig strong posts on the front line when Christopher was hit and killed instantaneously. Son of Frederick William and Elizabeth Ann Adamson (formerly Stocks) CWGC 10 Jameson Street Meanwood Road Leeds. Enlisted Brisbane Queensland  12/07/1915 Occupation Labourer. Left Melbourne onboard HMAT Wandilla 09/11/1915. Mothers address was 53 Sweet Street Holbeck Leeds. 11/03/1916 Rank changed from Bugler to Private.  Red Cross Statements Cpl W. J. Birchmore 2091 saw a shell hit Ernest in the face and killing him outright he stitched him up in a blanket. Ernest in his will gave 20 pounds to Herbert Stocks who lived in Rhodesia. 20 Pounds to his sister Amy who was living at 53 Sweet Street Holbeck. 20 pounds to Miss Evelyn Powell of 77 Hillary Street Leeds. CWGC 8 Weller Avenue Burmantofts. Attended York Road Council School. Went to Australia 1912. Enlisted Sydney 07/11/1914. Left Sydney onboard HMAT Seang Bee 11/02/1815 Occupation Iron Turner. SUGDEN Norman Private 2488 A Company 56th Bn Australian Infantry DOW  21/09/1918 Aged 26. Born Cleckheaton. Son of Benjamin Jowett B and Lavinia Grimshaw Married St Michael Buslingthorpe 1888. No 107 Cardigan Road Headingley. Husband of Florrie Mennell Married Methodist Church Cardigan Lane Burley 02/03/1918 CWGC 47 Burley Lodge Road Leeds. Enlisted Sydney 03/04/1916. Left Sydney onboard HMAT Aeneas 30/09/1916 Occupation Labourer. Red cross witness reported seeing Norman watching a 10 pounder firing when an enemy shell landed and Norman was hit by shrapnel. Admitted to 12 General Hospital Rouen  09/09/1918  Photos of Normans Grave were sent to Florrie in Leeds. As far as i am aware she never remarried and passed away in Leeds in 1971. TIBBS Walter Private 946 D Company 8th Bn Australian Infantry KIA 25/04/1915 Aged 18. Born Hunslet 1897. Son of Charles Walter and Eleanor Holdsworth Married St Peter with St Cuthbert Hunslet Moor 1896. CWGC 17 Tulip Street Hunslet. Enlisted Broadmeadows Victoria 21/08/1914, lied about his age being only 17 Walter gave his age as 22. Occupation Farmer. His roll of Honour describes him as being an excellent violinist who was educated at Castleford Secoundary School. Embarked for Alexandria Egypt 05/04/1915 onboard HMAS Glan McGillvary. In 1917 Walters Mother recieved his personal effects. Laid to rest Artillery Road West Cemetery before being reintered at Shell Green Cemetery Gallipoli Turkey. VALLETTE Louis Private 3515 50th Bn Australian Infantry Killed in Action 25/04/1918 Aged 45. Born Leeds 1873. Son of James and Mary Louis. Spent 8 years in the West Yorkshire Regiment seeing action in South Africa at Ladysmith Tugula Heights amongst others, he attained five bars on the Queens South African Medal and two bars on the King s South African Medal. Emigrated around 1904 to Australia. Enlisted 19/07/1915 Keswick South Australia. Occupation Joiner. Next of Kin Brother Philip 58 Leicester Grove Blackman Lane Leeds. Wounded Gun shot wound left thigh France September 1916 transferred to Harefield Hospital England. In 1917 Loyis suffered from Dermatitus and was transferred to Tidworth. VAUGHAN Derwent Radcliffe Lance Corporal 1754A B Company 50th Bn Australian Infantry DOW 11/06/1917 Aged 37.  Born Leeds 1880. Son of William Thomas and Priscilla Tyndale. Husband of Fanny Wilson Petch Married Beverley 1904. They had three children. Enlisted Adelaide 14/03/1916 residence Cheltenham Street Loxton River Murray. Landed France 01/04/1916. Volunteered Stretcher Bearer August 1916. Pvt Carr 2827 Reported that Derwent was nicknamed "Crawford" and that he had died of wounds at Neuve Eglise Hospital. This was confirmed by others who stated that on the 10/06/1917 Derwent was injured by a shell. His wife purchased copys of photos of Derwents Grave no pictures are available today. Enlisted 30/04/1915 Perth Letter of consent under 21 given by Father Thomas Saunders and Mother Harriett Firn Married June 1890 Leeds. Trained as a Signaller at Lemnes Greece on 29/12/1915. Landed in Marseilles 31/03/1916. Eyewitness account states Killed by Shell at 23.00 hrs crossing no mans land at Pozieres Alongside Leonard  O'loughlin 2018 Aged 18 and Minnatt ?. (Red Cross Detail)  Australian War Memorial Canberra Panel.

Laid to Rest Pieta Military Cemetery Malta by Reverend M.A Ferren.
