TEACHERS' MEMORIAL LEEDS.
A beautiful memorial in honour of members of the staff and students of the City Leeds Training College, Beckett's Park, who were killed in the war, was unveiled in the College Hall on Saturday, when the annual reunion of the students took place.
There are five brass tablets, mounted on oak. Four of them bear the names of one member of staff and 75 students, and on the central one, underneath a plaque of a silver owl surrounded by laurel leaves on silver enamel, appears the inscription
"To the honour of the men of this College who fell in the Great War. you, from failing hands, throw the torch: yours hold it high. If break faith with who die, shall not sleep."
Mr. Leslie Owen Leader Leeds Education Committee presided in the absence through illness of Alderman W. E. Farr chairman the Governors, and was supported by Mr. James Graham Director of Education in Leeds the Principal Dr. J. R. Airey the first principal of the College, and others. About 500 former students were present.
Mr. Graham, who unveiled the memorial. said,
"when the College was established there were 33 men and 97 women students, and those early days many difficulties were overcome by the staff end the students The members the College joined as a man soon as the Board of Education embargo had been retrieved, and 76 of them were killed. "They died the finest death a man can die for home and fatherland.' Mr. Graham added. "They died in order that might live life that worth living."
The Principal placed a laurel wreath at the foot of the memorial. Handel's March was played on the organ by Mr Jer. Stones music tutor at the collage
