Harrogate Herald 4th April 1917 "Mr & Mrs John Appleby, Glen Roy, East Parade, Harrogate, have had intimation that their son, Lieutenant Norman Appleby, of the Canadians, is reported missing as from March 29th. Lieutenant Appleby, it will be remembered, played three-quarters back for the Harrogate Old Boys, before emigrating to Canada. He obtained his commission some four months since and was hopefully looking forward to further usefulness in his country's cause."
Harrogate Herald 11th April 1917 "Lieutenant Norman Appleby, son of Mr & Mrs John Appleby, of Glen Roy, East Parade, Harrogate, who was reported missing in our last issue, has been killed in action. During an operation on the enemy trenches on 29th March he was killed instantly, and died without pain. The success of the operation was due largely to the determined and gallant way in which he carried out his work. His conduct inspired those under him, and his loss to the whole battalion is keenly felt.

Enlisted Montreal Canada 05/10/1915. On Roberts attistation papers he lied about his age saying he was born on the 5th of August 1895 which would have made him 20 years old. He was infact born 05/08/1899 making him just 16 years old, three years under the official age to enlist. Robert was 5 Feet 4 half inches tall with a fair complexion blue eyes and auborn hair, a chest size of 35 inches and a scar under his right nipple. Son of Thomas a cloth finisher and embosser Born Leeds 1844 and Sarah Ann Sykes Born Leeds 1850 Married 1869 St Andrew Leeds. After leaving Leeds Boys Modern Thomas emigrated to Toronto Canada in 1904 and started a business as a plasterer in the firm of Boyd and Colisham. 03/09/1914 Thomas enlisted into the Canadian expeditionary Force at Valcartier 16 km from Quebec in Canada joining the 9th Battery Canadian Field Artillery having previousley served for three years in the Boar war. At his medical Thomas is described as being 5ft 7 inches tall, with a dark complexion black hair Grey eyes with a chest size of 37 inches. Thomas arrived in England in November 1914 and after training was sent to France in February 1915. He fought at Ieper and Festhubert and it was said that he fired the first shot at Neuve Chapelle. Recommended three times for honours for as what was described as,"faithfull and Gallent service" It was reported Thomas was Instantaneously Killed by a German shell near Poperinghe Belgium.
