Roll of honour states: Mathew enlisted in January 1916 going to France in the May seeing action at Amiens Baupaume and was wounded at Cambrai where he passed away from his wounds.

Visiting his brother in South Africa when war broke out he came home to Leeds and Enlisted August 1914 at Leeds Town Hall into the Leeds Pals Business Battalion. Landed Egypt 06/12/1915. Lost his life leading "B" Company on the attack on Serre. Stanley lay in the field where he fell until the spring of 1917 when the battlefields were cleared. Stanley left £129.12 Shillings to his father.

Both brothers were remembered by their father when in 1923 he set up the Wilfred and Thomas Denison Lumb Memorial Fund at Leeds University. The fund was to be spent on books printed not later than 250 years before the date of purchase. It was reported that many rare French books had already been purchased enriching the collection.

In a report from a soldier at the front in the Leeds Mercury Thomas was nicknamed "Dusty" and was a Rugby Union player for the Headingley club side. Thomas left his father £147.15 Shillings. It was reported that he was the best Boxer in the Battalion at his weight. Thomas led D battalion alongside C battalion at 07.25 a Corporal James Thompson reporting in the Leeds Intelligencer said Thomas had told the boys that they were leading point and that he would be at the head of the point and would most likely get bent. Thompson went on to say that before they got out of the trench they lost nine boys in the trench. He described how they all climbed the ladder and walked towards no mans land after a few feet he heard a shell burst behind him, hitting him in the left arm and then another in front blowing a hole in his hand before he laid in a trench for hours.
