Leeds Town Hall Employees

Our Town Hall was designed by Cuthbert Broderick after winning a competition in 1852 and opened in 1858 by Queen Victoria. Broderick designed the Corn Exchange and Leeds Mechanic Institute now the Leeds Museum, as well as other buildings in the city. His most notable design would be the Scarborough Grand Hotel. A Weatherspoon's in Leeds can be found named in his honour in Millennium Square.

The Town Hall was a focal point over the years being a court and seeing over 80 executions in the cellars. In the First World War it was used as a recruiting centre most famously for the Leeds Pals the 15th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment. Those Loiners who gained the Victoria Cross were paraded on the steps in front of the two lions, as were other men who returned home. It was bombed in 1941 and slight damage can still be seen to the building.Found in the main entrance to Leeds Town Hall the memorial remembers the 40 men who gave their lives in World War One, and were employed by Leeds City Council. They worked in various departments within Leeds Town Hall before the war.
