SIMON Barnet (Barney) Private M/298299 9th Auxiliary Petrol Company Army Service Corps DIED 10:45 am 08/09/1917 Aged 38. Born Leeds 1879. Son of Archibald Born Russia 1844 and Fanny Born Russia 1846. Husband of Sarah Blaskey Married 1911 New Synagogue Chapletown Road formerly New Briggate Synagogue. Sons Archibald B 1912 and Arthur B 1914. Enlisted Leeds 11/01/1915. Occupation Shop Assistant Residence/CWGC 25 Conway Drive Harehills. Arrived Rouen France 16/06/1917 on board SS King Edward. Died from Accident Fractured Base of Skull near Retonval. At the investigation there were ten witnesses including two German prisoners of War. Private 3069 W. Stansfield Cheshire Regiment attached 52nd POW Company  stated  "Lorry 4844 became trapped in Mud 100 yards from a prisoner of war camp and Barnet was assisting to move the lorry by throwing stones at the base of the wheels to get a grip, wedges which were holding logs on the lorry came off and Barnet was observed jumping over the first two logs the third hit his head. Barnet was taken to the Casualty Station at Abancourt and died 20 minutes after arriving there.

THOMPSON BROTHERS

Sons of John and Mary Jewittt Married 1884 St Peters Leeds in 1911 the family resided at 5 Ellers Grave. CWGC 25 Hamilton Terrace.

Both brothers joined up together in Leeds on the 02/06/1915 into the same regiment having service numbers 17227 and 17228 respectively. They were sent to Gallipoli Turkey 14/11/1915 before being shipped to France in July 1916. Sadly both brothers gave their lives on the same day and most likely where next to each other as they went over the top.

THOMPSON William Private 17227 8th Bn West Riding Regiment KIA 14/09/1916 Aged 29. Husband of Zoe Helen Hopwood Married 04/09/1915 St Chads Headingley CWGC 71 Highbury Terrace Headingley. Laid to rest 3/4 mile east of the village of Authuille in 1919 he was moved to Lonsdale Cemetery. Epitaph on Williams Grave Reads " Also in Memory of 17227 Duke of Wellingtons Regiment 14th September 1916"

WHITEWICK Clarence Howard Corporal 306275 2/8th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 20/07/1918 Aged 22. Son of  Robert Norman and Sarah King Married 1890 St Clement Sheepscar 1911/CWGC 48 Bankside Street Roundhay Road Occupation Assistant Wholesale Clothing House. Clarence was laid to rest at Jonchery Sur Vesle he was identified by the name on the cross and a hospital card found on his body.

It took over a year for the family to be informed officially that Clarence had been killed. Most family's held out hope that there loved ones were prisoners of war in fact many who had been reported killed did arrive home. Sadly family's were being informed well into the early 1920s that there loved ones had been killed as the battlefield and cemetery's were cleaned up for the local population to rebuild and move on with their lives.
