SNOWDON Henry Frederick Lieutenant 1st Bn London Regiment KIA 06/06/1916 Aged 32. Born Clifford 1884. Son of Reverend Richard Kemplay Died 1896 Ledsham Vicarage and Mary Louisa Wright Married 1775. Mary Remarried 1916 at St Chad Far Headingley to Fairfax Rhodes. In 1902 Henry tried unsuccessfully to join the Army attending Sandhurst. 1911 Henry lived at 122 Otley Road Occupation Solicitor.

STABLES James Howard Lieutenant 1st Bn 8th Gurkha Rifles DOW 17/02/1917 Aged 21. Born Derby 1895. Son of Reverend Walter Howard and Emily Morse CWGC Inverugie Haslemere Surrey sometime Vicar of St. Chads Leeds. Educated at Winchester and Christ Church. Oxford. Enlisted 6th Bn Hampshire Regiment 20/09/1914 Served in Indian North West Frontier Abbottabad then Iraq from August 1916. Reported Severley Wounded and Missing in Action after fighting at the capture of Sanna-I-Yat 17/02/1917 the prelude to the 2nd Battle of Kut.

The cross below can be found inside St Chads Church. It is from James and dedicated the day he gave his life. It remembers his friends DEARMER Christopher from London a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Air Service KIA 06/10/1915. Also DURRANT Humphrey Mercer Lancelot from Wetherby a Midshipman on the Queen Mary that sunk 06/061916. Both had attended naval school at Winchester in 1911.

Son of Charles and Hannah Maria Renton Married 1892 Holy Trinity Meanwood. 1911 at School The Lodge Belle Vue Adel. Brother Alf Married at St Chads in 1932. Originally laid to rest 03/11/1918 (at odds with those who died records and CWGC website) at Gembloux which is 46 minutes north east of Mons. In 1925 finally Laid to Rest at St. Symphorien Military Cemetery Near Mons Belgium.
SUTCLIFFE Oswald Second Lieutenant 4th Bn King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry KIA 03/11/1916 Aged 21. Born Rastrick Near Brighouse. Son of Frederick and Mary Ann Thompson. Landed France 28/06/1916. Oswald Aunt resided at 148 Otley Road Far Headingley. 1911 Oswald was at School in Warminster.

When family's paid homage to their fallen sons on pain glass in churches, they nearly always ensured that their sons likeness was placed on a Saint in this case St Oswald. It is safe to assume from the photo above that the likeness below is that of Oswald.

THOMPSON William Private 17227 8th Bn West Riding Regiment KIA 14/09/1916 Aged 29. Son of John and Mary Husband of Zoe H Hopwood Married 1915 St Chad Far Headingley WGC 71 Highbury Terrace Headingley. 1911 no 5 Ellers Grove Occupation Warehouseman. Epitaph on Grave Reads "Also in Memory of 17228 Private H Thompson Duke of Wellingtons Regiment" in reference to Williams brother Harry Thompson who gave his life on the same day and is remembered on Thiepval Memorial Somme France. William was laid to rest alongside others from the West Riding Regiment many unknown one which could well have included his brother Harry. In 1919 he was finally Laid to Rest Lonsdale Cemetery Authuille France.

VAUGHAN Derwent Radcliffe Lance Corporal 1754A B Company 50th Bn Australian Infantry DOW 11/06/1917 Aged 37. Born Leeds 1880. Son of William Thomas and Priscilla Tyndale. Husband of Fanny Wilson Petch Married Beverley 1904. They had three children. Enlisted Adelaide 14/03/1916 residence Cheltenham Street Loxton River Murray. Landed France 01/04/1916. Volunteered Stretcher Bearer August 1916. Pvt Carr 2827 Reported that Derwent was nicknamed "Crawford" and that he had died of wounds at Neuve Eglise Hospital. This was confirmed by others who stated that on the 10/06/1917 Derwent was injured by a shell. His wife purchased copys of photos of Derwents Grave no pictures are available today.

WATSON Mark Sanderson Second Lieutenant 4th Bn Highland Light Infantry KIA 11/01/1917 Aged 22. Born Chester 1895. Son of Richard William and Isobel Sanderson Married 1894 Cockermouth. Address in will 7 Burton Crescent Headingley. Mark lost his life fighting at Khadairi Bend a heavily fortified town on the River Tigris North of Kut Iraq. It eventually fell on the 29/01/1917. Remembered Basra Memorial Iraq.
