He was called up on the 05/08/1914 landed Le Harve France on board SS Maiden 01/11/1914 in Liverpool John and those entitled to the 1914 star were called Maideners after the ship that transported them to France. In the early part of 1915 John suffered from Flu. Classed as missing KIA Railway Wood at the Battle of Hooge 2 miles east of Ypres 16/06/1915.
